Soup and Salad

Well, even I have to admit I underestimated this dinner social. I saw it on the Activity Calendar, as I was updating it for April and was a bit confused as to what this even was. Needless to say, I was suprised. We started, as usual, by setting up all the decorations, then night before- beautiful springtime flower arrangments, setting up the buffet table and of course hours of ironing table clothes, napkins and place mats. Seemed a little over done for soup and salad. Little did I know, there was such an impressive menu. Beef- vegitable soup, hearty tomato soup, minestroni and a great chili, served with a salad, rolls and a good spread of hard salami, an assortment of cheeses and crackers. It was delicious. The residents were amazed and very curious as to who prepared it. Vivian, our dietary manager, definately did a GREAT JOB!! Again, staff donned our aprons and got the food out quick and left no one undecided wether they were still hungry. Our administrator has decided to raise the bar and feature at least 2 of these dinner socials a month. This is opposed to the at least one a month, previously mentioned in the blog. Our next event, is going to be Pizza night on the 23rd.

St. BaldRicks Foundation

Never heard of it? St. BaldRick's Foundation is a charity that raises money for research and awareness of Childhood Cancer. At each event, hundreds of volunteers shave their head (as children with cancer often lose their hair) and have friends and co-workers "sponser" them to raise money for the cause. Check out their site for more info at www.stbaldricks.org. Well, this year, one of Calvin Johnson Care Center's nurses participated. Not only did John participate and shave his head, but a long list of other employees supported him and the cause by donating over 800 dollars!! Blowing his goal of $500 away. Check out the stats here John's Shave. It was a wonderful event, and definately heart breaking and eye openning to meet some of the kids the foundation is involved with. I recommend others check out St. BaldRick's and look for local events near them.
